The Last Christmas Tree

An evergreen by Dierk Andresen

There's toxic waste, there're landfill sites
all over our poor planet.
Pollutants, fumes, and pesticides
spell ecological suicide:
Call Greenpeace now and Robin Wood
and save us from destruction.

"Recycle!" and "Reduce!", "Re-use!" -
these are three magic concepts:
Green products and organic food
make sense and (bonus!) taste so good.
Consumers can achieve a lot
when environmentally conscious.

Look! Rain forests, the deep blue seas
are threatened by our lifestyle.
Mankind, consumption - they will grow
relentlessly, as we all know.
This system's mad. Let's mend our ways -
or we will face disaster.

Don't buy wrapped food, use cotton bags
and turn off lamps and engines.
Hydro-electric power will
help, tidal power, the wind(y)mill...
No Chernobyl. No droughts. No floods.
It can be done. Just do it!

Coal, oil, and gas are fossil fuels,
they harm the ozone layer.
So, to create more energy,
use nuclear power? - Oh, no! You see,
there's solar power, yes, solar power!
We'll have a sunny future.

Let's hope that our grandchildren will
still have a tree for Christmas
Pollution will accelerate.
Turn back before it is too late!
It's our world. We just have one.
Let's clean it up together!

To be sung to the tune of "O Tannenbaum"
