NEW IDEAS FOR THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSROOM by Dierk Andresen

Find the difference

Procedure:

1) Let students sit in pairs and hand each player one of the two picture sets (A or B).

2) Make sure that players can't see the picture of their partner.

3) Students then describe their pictures and try to find the differences. These can lie in the different arrangement of the some objects or in other variations. The more similar the objects and the slighter the differences, the more difficult will the game be. (The examples above make for a very easy game. The missing flag, arm, and Big Ben are perhaps the only major difficulty.)

WHY

This activity practices describing things and spatial relationships of various elements.

WHAT YOU NEED

Sets of two similar pictures per pair of students.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
10-15 minutes. Usually students would like to repeat the activity with a different set of pictures.
USEFUL TIP

a) To prepare such picture sets you can either use paper, scissors, glue and Tipp-ex or use the copy and paste functions and the digital eraser of your picture processing software.

b) You could also use these picture sets as a base for creative story writing or telling.

ON THE WEB
Go to the image search of Google and enter any query you like. Set the "Advanced Image Search" to black and white for simple graphics. (Compare the results for a search for "feelings" in
any colour with those for black and white.)
